Almería city is outside totality. Roquetas de Mar, 16 km away, is inside and has 1 minute 37 seconds. This is the clearest warning against using the nearest large city as a substitute for a checked point within the path.

At maximum eclipse, the Sun is 35 to 47.6 degrees above the horizon on the mainland and 24.6 to 29.1 degrees in the Canary Islands. A sea horizon is not required, but the observing point still needs a clear line of sight in the direction of the Sun.

- Confirm the coordinates. Do not infer totality from a province, hotel name or nearby city.
