The next major solar eclipses visible from Spain

The total eclipse of 2 August 2027 is followed by an annular eclipse over Spain on 26 January 2028. After that event, the next totality visible from Spanish territory is on 12 September 2053, and it reaches only a small part of the far south.

2 August 2027: total eclipse

The path of totality crosses southern Spain before continuing through North Africa and Egypt. Ceuta has 4 minutes 48 seconds of totality, Tarifa 4 minutes 39 seconds and Algeciras 4 minutes 28 seconds. The global maximum is 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor.

Travellers need to distinguish between a base city and the final observing point. Almería city is outside the path at 99.99%, while Roquetas de Mar is inside and has 1 minute 37 seconds of totality. See the viewing-location guide and the verified time windows.

26 January 2028: annular eclipse at sunset

An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon does not cover the entire solar disc. A bright ring remains visible around it. The sky does not enter totality and the solar corona does not appear.

There is no safe naked-eye phase during an annular eclipse. Compliant solar filters must remain in use throughout, including inside the path of annularity.

Seville has 7 minutes 16 seconds of annularity. Madrid city lies outside the annular path and sees 82.3% coverage with the Sun 4 degrees above the horizon. A low western horizon is therefore part of the site choice.

12 September 2053: totality returns to a small area

After 2028, the next total eclipse visible from Spain is on 12 September 2053. Its path touches only Tarifa, Ceuta and Algeciras.

This limited footprint is why the 2027 path across southern Spain matters. It provides more location choices and substantially longer totality at several verified points.

Total and annular eclipses require different viewing rules

During complete totality, inside the total path, the covered Sun may be viewed without a filter. That exception ends at the first point of returning light.
